Rio Karioka delves into this watercourse that played a fundamental role in the initial settlements of the territory where the present-day city of Rio de Janeiro stands. Since Pereira Passos' urban reform (1903-1906), much of the river has been flowing underground.

Of enormous significance to the indigenous communities that lived in the region, as well as for the overall water supply until the 19th century, the river holds an undeniable symbolic dimension deeply intertwined with the city.

This site, which articulates both found and produced fragments, is part of the master's project titled Carioca River: flowing water, rumor (2022), conceived by Helena Lessa at the postgraduate program in visual arts (PPGAV-EBA-Linguagens Visuais) at UFRJ, under the guidance of Tadeu Capistrano.
